Bees are responsible for one in every three bites of food we eat and play an essential role in the pollination of more than 70% of all flowering plants. There are nearly 400 bee species in Michigan, most of which are native and live a solitary existence, unlike the non-native honey bee. Dr. Julianna Tuell, a pollination ecologist in the Department of Entomology at Michigan State University will desribe some of the more common native bees, where they nest, and what home gardeners can do to help them flourish, including selecting native plants to attract them.
