This year's Christmas Bird Count was certainly less Christmas-y than usual, with above average temps and no snow in sight. Still, participants enjoyed the day, as we do every year! Despite overall individual bird numbers being noticeably low, the species variety was great, with a total of 78 species, plus one more added on during count week (the second highest count for our circle)! Amongst these species were two new birds, Marsh Wren and Great Egret, as well as seven species recorded in record high numbers, including Mute Swan, Trumpeter Swan, Ring-necked Duck, Bufflehead, Merlin, Piliated Woodpecker, and Chipping Sparrow.
Thanks to everyone who showed up to count the birds, whether in the field or at feeders, and a big thanks to everyone who brought food to share at the tally. Finally, we appreciate the staff at Stony Creek Nature Center for hosting the tally each year.
Hope you all had a warm holiday season, and here's to good birding in 2024! The complete results can be found on our Macomb Audubon website or the National Audubon website: https://www.audubon.org/conservation/science/christmas-bird-count. Go to Access Count Results (scroll down a bit), continue to Current Year then choose Results by Count and enter Western Macomb County's Code MIWM. Lastly click the circle under the # sign.
